All-Terrain Cable Crane for China

19.04.2013

On the 19th of April 2013 the Experimental Center of Tropical Forestry (ECTF) ordered the Koller K 303 H cable crane. This cable crane is the key-element of ECTF’s strategy to enable selective timber harvesting in steep terrain by advanced timber harvesting and extraction methods. To complete the order process Mr. Xy, an import agent, signed the purchase order and service contract for the mobile all-terrain cable crane on behalf of ECTF together with Mr. Roland Fürst of Koller Forsttechnik GmbH in Nanning, the capital of the Guangxi province. The ordered cable crane is an advanced all-terrain machine for uphill and downhill yarding and is the first of its kind in China. It will help to increase occupational health and safety of logging operations in steep terrain and will allow for reduced impact logging.

The purchase contract was one of the highlights during the most recent project meeting in Pingxiang. Furthermore, Mr. Fürst and Prof. Dr. Dirk Jaeger, project leader of timber harvesting and wood processing (working package 2.2), met with ECTF Director Cai Daoxiong and his scientific staff to plan the implementation of the cable crane system in fall 2013. In addition to developing a training schedule for operating staff, different training sites were selected to introduce cable yarding to ECTF staff and local contractors. Elements of the training include planning of machine employment, operation and maintenance, but also related procedures such as directional felling and operational awareness within selective cutting and thinning operations.
