First weeks of Lin4Wood fieldwork in Guangxi

Between 19th of March and 22nd of April 2013, the PhD students Jan Hackenberg (WP 2.1), Stephan Hoffmann (WP 2.2 + WP 2.4) and Marc Wassenberg (WP 2.4), supported by the Freiburg Master student Kathy Chiu and the Chinese partners, successfully completed their first field work activities in the forests of the Experimental Center of Tropical Forestry (Pingxiang, Guangxi).

Five trees of each studied tree species (Eucalyptus grandis x E. urophylla, Pinus massoniana and Mytilaria laosensis) were processed in the following way: At first, laser scanning data was collected with a “Z+F IMAGER 5010” machine to estimate the tree volume by scanning each tree from four different scan positions (WP 2.1). After the successful scanning, the trees were felled and stem discs as well as branch discs were collected in different heights for the density analysis with HF densitometry (WP 2.4). Afterwards all components of the tree were weighed to gain the necessary ground truth data for the biomass prediction. The residual compartments of the trees were brought to a MDF-plant for producing wood chips. The wood chips for the pellet experiments and stem discs were kiln-dried and prepared for shipment to Germany in order to conduct further laboratory analysis. Additionally in every stand the DBHs of all trees in defined areas ranging from 1500 m2 to 4000 m2 were measured.
