Final meeting of Lin2Value Project in March 2015 in China

2015/04/17

After a 3-years period of intensive Sino-German collaboration in Forest Science and Technology,  German and Chinese Scientists met to present and discuss the project findings of the Lin2Value project. Lin2Value was a Sino-German research project that consisted of the two subprojects “Lin4Carbon” and “Lin4Wood”, coordinated by the Georg-August-University Goettingen and the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg, respectively. Major funding on the German side came by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The overall goal of the joint project was to identify, develop and analyze innovative technological and methodological approaches in the context of land use improvement. The focus was on improved forest management and its impact on optimization of carbon sequestration and other environmental services, like biodiversity, in Chinese plantation forests. In that context, research questions from various forest science disciplines had been worked on which included silviculture, forest planning, forest operations, remote sensing and forest monitoring.

In March 2015, the 3-years project period ended and in order to inform decision-makers in China about the projects´ outcomes, Prof. Yuanchang Lu from the Chinese Academy of Science and his team organized a final meeting at three places meeting: at the project region of the Lin4Carbon sub-project in Shitai and Hefei, Anhui Province, at the project region of the Lin4Wood sub-project in Pingxiang, Guangxi Province and eventually in Beijing at the Chinese Academy of Forestry in order to reach Chinese forestry decision makers

Research of the Lin2Value program meets the current discussions on forest management and carbon forestry in China. During the opening session, Ms. Xiuli Wu the Deputy General Director of the Department of Afforestation from the State Forestry Administration (SFA) highlighted the importance of joint Sino-German Research in forest management in China especially in the field of close-to-nature forestry. The Deputy Director General of the Climate Change Office at SFA Mr. Chunfeng Wang gave an introduction on the efforts to establish a Carbon trading system in China a topic that was later on picked up by Prof. Christoph Kleinn from the Chair of Forest Inventory and Remote Sensing at the University of Göttingen and the Lin4Carbon scientists. During the last years, Lin4Carbon contributed significantly to the development of methods for improved forest management and for an efficient quantitative assessment of carbon stocks with monitoring systems that integrate field observations and remote sensing. The Lin4Wood sub-project in Guangxi Province focused on the implementation of modern harvesting techniques e.g. cable yarding and the assessment of biomass, which included terrestrial laser scanning and densitometry.

Both sides, Chinese and German, highlighted the fruitful cooperation during the last years and the results they achieved during the project time.

Publication of the Lin2Value findings and research results is not finished yet and continues as does the planning for possible future cooperation projects in order to achieve a better understanding of the ecosystem forest and the utilization of timber as a sustainable resource.

The Results of the Lin4Carbon sub-project were handed over by Prof. Christoph Kleinn to Governor Genjie Li and Forestry Bureau Director Xiaoping Wang
