Subproject 1 (Lin4Carbon)

  1. Integrated carbon inventory and monitoring system:
Development and optimization of integrated inventory methods for the assessment of above-ground biomass and carbon stock: innovative techniques for efficient integration of remotely sensed data and terrestrial inventory; improvement of carbon models; testing of regionalisation approaches.
  2. Forest dynamics under climate change:
Analyze the adaptability of the plantation forests to climate change; Evaluation of the effect of converting plantations to close-to-nature and carbon-rich forests; Modeling and assessment of development scenarios.
  3. Development of "Carbon Forestry" business model:
Development of scientifically validated methods as basis for carbon accounting according to the IPCC Standards.
  4. Sino-German scientific dialog:
Improving and focusing on the existing scientific cooperation in development of basic methods in the respective fields of work; ensuring the visibility and profile of the model project; enhancing and broadening scientific networks as well as intensifying the cooperation between industry and science.

Subproject 2 (Lin4Wood)

  1. Terristrial laser scanning and biomass assessment: Elaboration of new methods to describe and quantify 3D forest structures. Development and evaluation of innovative techniques for accurate and efficient biomass assessment as a basis for the quantification of biomass production and carbon sequestration.
  2. Harvesting and wood processing: Identification of suitable harvesting techniques, introduction and adaptation of modern semi-mechanized harvesting technologies as an alternative to existing manual operations. Evaluation of innovative techniques for the conversion of low-quality wood and residues into wood chips and / or pellets (decreasing transportation volume and increasing calorific value) for a cost efficient and less CO2 emitting bioenergy supply.
  3. Site assessment and nutrient cycling: Elaboration of methods for a model-supported assessment of carbon (humus) and nutrient status; development of a forest-type and management-specific carbon and nutrient flux models for the assessment of sustainability of biomass and timber production.
  4. Quality analysis of woody biomass: Analysis of new methods for the determination of wood density as process relevant parameter in wood utilization. Further analysis will be conducted for information about calorific value, biomass production as well as the carbon sequestration potential and the effects on the nutrient cycle.
  5. Social and economical aspects of biomass production: Analysis of major driving factors in biomass production under special consideration of future governmental subsidies and other incentives, the potential influence of carbon markets and risk assessment.
