Summer school on silviculture and remote sensing in the Anhui province of China

2013/09/30

Chinese and German students, scientists, and forest employees came together to conduct a summer school in Hefei and Shitai on silviculture and remote sensing in the Lin2Value project from September 2nd to September 9th 2013.

This summer School was organized and implemented by project partners from the Chair of Forests Inventory and Remote Sensing of the Faculty for Forest Science and Forest Ecology in Göttingen (Germany) and the School of Forestry and Landscape Architecture of the Anhui Agricultural University in Hefei (China) the participants had the were asked to present their most recent research approaches and results from the Lin4Carbon project. The summer school was opened with key note presentations on the topics “Forest and Climate Change” by Bernhard von der Heyde (GIZ) and “Forest Monitoring – its role in international processes” by Prof. Dr. Christoph Kleinn (University Göttingen).

The other presentation topics reached from practical considerations of thinning methods, multifunctional and close-to-nature forest management, over methods to derive biomass functions and estimate the biomass potential of large landscapes, to methods and possibilities of remote sensing and many more. All presentation resulted in open and rich discussions with the purpose of exchanging knowledge and experience among the participants.

The presentations were accompanied by two field trips in which a Chinese fir plantation and a Chinese natural forest were visited. During the field trips, different methodological aspects of the presentations were revived and demonstrated, and the participants were encouraged to gain their own experience during exercises and practical applications of the methods.

All summer school participants agreed that the summer school was a full success and led to very pleasing results. Especially the excursions were seen as excellent opportunity to broaden and exchange knowledge. But not only the summer school participants showed great interest, also the local Shitai TV used the summer school as opportunity to introduce the project to the local population and emphasize the meaning of modern forest management in Shitai.
